Yeah, Cath, The Dead were decades ahead of everyone else. The music industry thought they were nuts.

Then, when The Dead succeeded, the industry wrote it off as an anomaly. They figured that the kind of strategies The Dead used could only work with Deadheads. Boy, were they wrong.

If you pick up a copy of the book, I'd love to hear your thoughts.

Hi Mark - I'm glad I found your blog through your guest post at Awake at the Wheel. I don't know much about the Grateful Dead but it sounds like the book is definitely worth reading.

It sounds like they were way ahead of the times. Nowadays with so much music available online for free a lot of bands are finding that they have to tour to make money.

Hi, Matt. Yeah, it does sound like a bestseller, doesn't it? I'm psyched to study the complete text.

From my reading of the first few chapters, it does indeed talk all about how The Dead marketed their business (even if the band themselves didn't originally think of their practices as "marketing") -- and that would include facilitating a community around the recordings and shows.

Thanks, too, for the kind words about the new edition of my book. Much appreciated.

Mark, thanks for sharing info on this new book. It sounds like a "hit".

Do you know if the authors also address how the Grateful Dead created and facilitated a community around their shows and music?

No band has been able to do it better than them, and creating a community around your brand and product or service is critical for business success.

Matt

PS Looking forward to reading the new and expanded Accidental Genius.

Wow, what a wonderful compliment, David. Thank you.

That's a wonderful insight: that being yourself helps you to do your best, most unique work.

Again, thanks!

Mark - thanks so much for this terrific post.

You've helped me in many ways and I appreciate that. I think if we had not worked together for the past three years, I'd have been reluctant to do this book. You helped give me guts to be myself.

Best
